this will be our last post on the "old" blog. these images were taken a few years ago when we were planning our own wedding. here she is at White playing with the veils as she is measured by Lauren for her dress. what an incredible experience to have her as part of our celebration, and all of the events leading up to it. we decided not to rush to the altar before she was born, that just seemed old fashioned and unnecessary... so we waited until she was old enough to be part of our day. we even played her favourite Raffi song after our first dance to kick things off!

Yesterday, The Wedding Co. organized a special tour for us wedding folk to view the newly renovated AGO. A bit uninspired by the "banquet hall" that is Baillie Court, but mesmerized by the staircase in Walker Court. If only you could drink cocktails in Gallery Italia (that beautiful space along Dundas... cross your fingers they change their mind!

The AGO is not the only one with a new home... our new blog is coming along... next week we will be unveiling... !

Also, if you've emailed us and your message has bounced back, please give me a call: 647-880-9669. Our host company is looking into the issue... again cross your fingers!

hello lovely blog readers. i am home. although not unpacking my bags, as i leave again on wednesday for arizona. one must embrace the quieter months to rejuvenate for the busier ones.

we learned so many wonderful things this past week at WPPI. we can't wait to share what we've learned with you. so many new things on the way. one new thing will be our prettier new blog. i will post the link as soon as we've plumped it up with wonderful new images.

the nevada desert is a subtle shade of beautiful. the nothingness and absence filled me with lightness. shades of silvery white abound. i would love to photograph a wedding in the desert. las vegas weddings COULD be incredibly gorgeous. you just have to look past the obvious.

if anyone out there wants to fly to vegas for a no fuss wedding... it could be a beautiful thing. call me!

wow.

i've read other peoples reactions to jesh's workshops and classes.

it is something you must experience and be present for to really understand how lovely it is.

have you ever taken a class and had your eyes well up and spill over?

sounds corny huh?

it's not.

what i took away from my time with jesh and all the beautiful folks in the class, was to continue on the path i have already chosen. that is to be truthful with myself and my clients, to really connect authentically and share myself openly.

to continue to see the beauty, the unique beauty, in each person i meet.

i sincerely look forward to capturing your beauty and reflecting it back to you in a collection of images. images that have the power to remind you everyday of how gorgeous you are outside and in!

when two photographers entrust you to capture their wedding day it is truly a humbling and inspirational experience. what an incredible day... married at a greek orthodox church filled with golden light, then on to the ROM's C5 restaurant for a delightful dining experience in a room with incredible lines. this image caught my eye as i was uploading their files... i will share more with you in the coming days.

just taking a quick moment between Master Classes here at WPPI in vegas. sitting in with Jesh De Rox in a few minutes, so gotta run. i am very excited to find out what Jesh thinks about the wedding photographers of the future.

we spent valentine's day shooting a really fun couple with incredibly beautiful taste. a gorgeous ceremony candlelit at Gibson Jessop Gallery in the Distillery, followed by roaring party at Archeo... there were black lions and chandeliers to add to the magic.

More pictures once I've returned from Vegas next week. My girlfriend (fellow wedding photographer Catherine) and I just landed in Las Vegas for the WPPI conference. We plan to find amazing products for our clients and learn lots of new skills and fancy moves... we'll keep you posted as the week unfolds. ciao for now.

Looking East

On sunday we were looking east from the top of the CN tower. Thursday we will be looking out the window of a plane as we fly to Mexico to shoot our first 2009 wedding! We are delighted to spend a few days with an amazing group of people as they celebrate the marriage of Leslie & Jasmine. We will be sure to post pics from our sweet hotel by the ocean.

Today on the Martha Stewart Wedding's blog... Mary Cahill, Senior Photo Editor, posted a conversation regarding the importance of wedding photography.

Here is her conversation with John Dolan, an incredible photographer, regarding his own wedding day photography:

What did you look for in a wedding photographer?

I wanted the best witness. I knew well the importance of the photographer, both as historian and as a presence at the wedding. Luckily, my mentor, Sylvia Plachy (Adrian Brody's mother), agreed to come to our wedding. Her personality added so much to the whole event. She understood how to capture the vibe of the wedding and share the excitement of the day. She became part of the party, instead of staying on the outside.

What was your favourite moment captured on your wedding day?

Two moments: First, Sylvia was wandering around the house while my bride was getting dressed and she came upon my future mother-in-law having breakfast in bed. The portrait she made of the mother of the bride in bed, in curlers and a bathrobe, is still one of my favourites. Secondly, the last scene of our wedding was wild. We were trying to say goodbye and drive away, but it was taking so long that I had to drag my bride away from her friends, laughing. It is all captured on one roll of film. I blew up the whole contact sheet to 16x20, and when I look at it I can still hear the band playing "Eight Days a Week".

Any unique tips for how to archive & display your wedding photos?

Pick the 10 best and separate them and treat them special. I like to matt them and put them in a separate archival box. Today so many brides are flooded with images, but in the end you really need ten gems, and they need to be treated right.

Thank you to all of the lovely people who stopped by our booth at the Carlu this past weekend. We had so much fun... really! I was so full of energy on sunday night that I dragged my husband out to see Bride Wars. A must see for all. I laughed, I cried... and oh that Vera Wang looked incredible on Kate Hudson.

I would like to sincerely thank the organizers of The Wedding Show for their amazing talent. The show is a beautiful collection of kind and creative vendors. What a treat to be amongst them.

my daughter and i planted an amaryllis bulb weeks ago... it still amazes me that a beautiful flower can grow so big and so tall from a little bulb in soil. the earth is a magical place. be sure to walk softly upon it... so that our children may enjoy the magic too.

a fresh baked pie is heaven. i love christmas for many reasons, but one of them is the chance to SLOW down and bake with my daughter. my own aunt taught me how to bake a pie years ago, she was taught by her mother/my grandmother, and i am now teaching my daughter. the earth is magic, but so are we. share what you know, make a craft or bake a gift this holiday... the receiver of your gift will feel incredibly special. we are all so busy these days, a homemade gift is something we all cherish immensely.

it rained buckets on saturday... so we cuddled up inside and took advantage of all corners of this couples sweet condo for their engagement shoot.

in the picture above i stood outside and captured them through their balcony window. thank goodness for the balcony above which provided some shelter from the wet sky. i will be sure to post more creative indoor photography this week as i process their images.

last night we were treated to the performance of a lifetime. not only did my whole family attend a Feist concert (which was breathtaking)... but we were over the moon to be there cheering on my baby brother (who is no baby anymore). my brother corey is the drummer for the amazing band Cuff the Duke... who are performing with Hayden opening for Feist on tour. what a show. what a night. i'm still smiling. so proud.

sometimes i get asked the question: "why do an engagement shoot?"

one answer is that it is an amazing RELAXED time for us to get to know each other as photographer and sitter. i get to know your "good side", how you interact together, and it really inspires me for the big day.

next answer is that it is an amazing opportunity for you to capture a "day in the life". we often hit a couple of special locations, places that have meaning to both of you and that help tell the story of who you are.

i heart sikh weddings.

todd, melanie and i shot a beautiful sikh wedding ceremony on saturday morning at the Four Seasons. the feeling of support, love and community was incredibly strong. i felt truly honoured to be given the responsibility of capturing the union of this couple.

a series of photographs taken like a spy from the hip. how could i not sneak a few in? this palace was breathtaking. Maria Theresa of Austria is responsible for the decadent Rococo style. eat your heart out!

austria PART TWO... we go to Graz

ever heard of Graz? the terminator was born there, but you'd never know it if you didn't first read it somewhere. no sign of arnold anywhere. the old town is one of the best preserved city centers in Europe and in 1999 it was added to UNESCO's list of World Cultural Heritage Sites.

train travel is incredibly civilized, except for the absolutely horrific coffee served on board. you'd think in Austria, the coffee would be good everywhere... not so, they serve INSTANT !!!! Nescafe! yuck.

again... the hotel is half the fun. a 30 second walk from the train station, hotel daniel, is like 1950's miami without the ocean view.

according to the local paper, Pete Doherty had recently frequented this lovely "non stop" strip club across from the hotel.

a hot pink swing. what more could a girl ask for?

this is an elevator that takes you up through a very cold cave/hill (think batman). and on top of that hill is the best outdoor dining experience EVER! Aiola Upstairs. an early morning view from our balcony before we catch the train back to vienna.

perhaps you've noticed an absence... my husband and i took our long awaited honeymoon this past week. how lovely to travel a distance, 8 hours, to find some time to just be present. i will be posting more pictures over the next few days. feels great to be home.

Billie Holiday once sang: "A sailboat in the moonlight and you, wouldn't that be heaven, a heaven just for two... some things dear that i long for are few, just give me a sailboat in the moonlight and you."

On saturday, at the Toronto Golf Club, Tom married Sarah. Tom is an avid sailor and Sarah is now too. Sarah's beautiful engagement ring, an heirloom from Tom's family, originally belonged to A.Y. Jackson (yes, he was a member of the Group of Seven). Their invitations were based on a card Sarah's parents received at their own wedding. The earrings Sarah wore were her Grandmother's who had had two husbands, so the diamonds were two different sizes... one from each marriage! I love when family traditions, heirlooms and histories are passed forward.

i dream of flowers...

really! if i have trouble falling asleep at night... i imagine i am falling into a field of soft pastel coloured flowers with the sweetest and most fragile scent. i really do love flowers. today i popped over to Stemz to shoot some photos for their new website. i absolutely love every creation these talented ladies dream up. if you are looking for a florist for your wedding, i highly recommend this beautiful floral studio.

reunion junkies

me and my girlfriend, fellow reunion junkie and amazing travel partner!

we headed southeast this past weekend to Camp Walt Whitman's 60th reunion in New Hampshire. a camp i called, my home away from home, for six years. walt whitman changed our lives for the better... thank you to the directors, staff and campers, past & present, for making camp a place for personal & professional growth, and above all tons and tons of fun!

we get goosebumps and butterflies as we turn off cape moonshine road to enter camp.

my lens got all fogged up upon entering square dance... this photo really shows what it feels like to be surrounded by hundreds of dancing sweaty campers and staff!

ann... the matriarch of camp. i admire her for her strength of character, her overflowing love and dedication to the people who make camp the memorable place it is, and i am amazed that she still runs square dance.

of course we couldn't help but do a little shopping before heading back to canada.

Kathy, Ted and I managed to squeeze in a morning engagement session just one week before their wedding. We chose to explore the often overlooked spaces of our amazing city... under the gardiner expressway. Imagine if they do decide to take it down one day? The first image is looking eastward towards The Beach... the middle image was taken down near Harbourfront... and the last facing west at Spadina.

a beautiful friend of mine is expecting her third child. we spent a couple of hours taking pictures the other day. an afternoon of sharing women's stories and daily dramas.

i love the quiet intimacy of maternity shoots.

there is so much mystery too... before a child comes into the world. boy or girl? what will the baby look like, it's temperament... so many things to ponder.

we can't wait to meet you little one.

vita and chris asked me to capture some images of them in their favourite neighborhood.

engagement shoots are a fabulous way for photographer and couple to prepare for the big occasion. there is a certain comfort level that enables us to really capture the story of the couple if we've already had the opportunity to work together. like my tag line reads: Together we tell your story. i see my job as a partnership. and this partnership gets better and better the more we work together.

we also have loads of really chill time together during an engagement session that is just not available on the wedding day.

so... at last, i have a blog.

many fun things keep happening in my life and i thought i would share them with you.

tonight i was asked to document L'Oreal Canada's 50th Anniversary. a small gathering of the industries finest. here is a pic of two of my favourite people in Canadian fashion... the Mimran's (Club Monaco, Caban (how i miss thee), Joe Fresh and of course, lovely Pink Tartan).
